2011 Club Challenge

It's that time of year again when we take up the challenge against clubs from across Sydney. Last year was our first entry into this competition and we played against North Sydney, South Coogee and North Bondi in a home and away series. Whilst we didn't win too many matches, we gained very valuable experience playing against different clubs, on different greens and with different attitudes to bowls than at our club. All in all, a great experience.

This year we are in a series against North Sydney, Belrose, The Hills, Merrylands and Northmead. We can expect the competition from all these clubs will be fierce and they will be doing their utmost to win.

  1. Round 2 at home hosting Belrose.

After 40mm of rain overnight, the green was always going to be a little on the ‘slow’ side, and the green did not disappoint.

Our visitors quickly found the length and line and set out to cement a lead in each of the games. Peter was outgunned in the singles game, where a number of drives were used to unseat his position. Unfortunately, Peter couldn’t recover and lost 10:31.

In the pairs match, despite some terrific drawing and on shots by both Warren and Michael, the Belrose boys overpowered them. Final score was a loss of 8:16.

The challenge in the fours was how to overcome a third that nailed virtually every shot he was called to perform by his skip. A great performance and one to emulate in terms of accuracy, control and variety. What the third didn’t do, the skip finished off. This might sound as though it was a one sided match, which it wasn’t. On the second last end whilst we were holding 4 shots, the opposition third played with weight just a little wider than ideal, and managed to make sufficient impact to turn the deficit to a 4 point in their favour. An 8 point swing on 1 bowl!
The final score was a loss of 10:17.

The afternoon was played in good spirits and good humour by both sides, and fortunately the predicted poor weather held off for the whole afternoon.

Congratulations to the boys from Belrose. we enjoyed the match (not the loss) and wish you the best in your coming matches.

    • 2011 Club Challenge, Sunday October 9th!
A great afternoon of competitive bowls against Belrose resulted in a defeat in all 3 games. (Singles, Pairs and Fours)
Never a bother for me being defeated by a great side of bowlers and furthermore good sports.
However, the question I must raise is: Where were our Home Side Supporters????
The game began with a couple of our members on the sideline and three or four of our ladies.
The ladies soon retreated after just few ends, but were still in the club when the game finished.
At one stage we had a total of six or eight of our male members watching.
I also noted a couple of bowlers had enjoyed lunch in the club prior to the game but they were not in the crowd of spectators.
Come on everyone!! Are you interested in our club being competitive or not??
It’s disappointing to players who represent your club that we have such little interest by our members.
For the record, we defeated North Sydney across all three rinks in Round One!
Round Three next week, I’ll be there!!

      Terry Barnett

      • Well put Terry – it would certainly be a better atmosphere with supporters urging us on. Maybe it was because the Wallabies were on the turf?

  2. For those that haven’t noticed, the Selectors have kept the squad from first round. Probably thinking there’s little point toying with a combination that won all 3 games in the first round.

Check the team by selecting the menu option at left. This scores from the games will be updated there each game.

  3. What a day! With the mist rolling in off the harbour and thoughts of rain to upset the afternoon, delays to the start due to North Sydne bowlers not knowing they were meant to be playing today, our teams set to the task of playing the best bowls we could.

    And what were the results?
In the Singles Peter Eagle worked hard to shake off his opponent and once he broke free was in no danger oflosing. A great victory to Peter at 31 to 19.

In the pairs, Michael and Warren stamped their ownership of the match right from the start and never looked in danger. Final result was an emphatic win of 21:13.

The fours had a tougher battle on their hands. With delays waiting for their lead to arrive after work, the team set about building heads. However, the North Sydney skip is quite comfortable playing weight into the head to ‘see what happens’. In many cases he produced some disturbing results. Aaron and I focused on making sure we had the jack covered and back bowls to reduce the risk of the drive. Once we got that working, Mat and Terry could focus on winning the ends. Final score after a close game was 18 to 14 victory to WPH.

So, 3 wins today from 3 games.
Last weekend 9 wins from 13 games.
That’s 12 wins from 16 games. Away from home! A terrific result and good news for our club. Lets keep it up boys.

I love the feeling of victory! And I love to feel it over and over. Just can’t get enough of it!

  4. The full draw for the 5 rounds of the Club Challenge is posted on the notice board in the Sports Room.

    • The next round of the Club Challenge will be at our Club on Sunday 9th October commencing at 2.00 pm. The game will be against Belrose BC and should be a good game. Spectators are welcome.
