2017 Gordon Atkins Men’s Fours – Grand Final

Congratulations to Peter Boyd, Rod Gamble, Mal Horner and Michael Quinlan on becoming our 2017 Fours Champions.

The final was between Peter Boyd, Rod Gamble, Mal Horner and Michael Quinlan and David Curtis, Geoff McIntosh, Rod Foster and David Wilson. Both teams kept pace with each other in the early stages of the game with the scores 6-4 after seven ends. Michael's team combined really well and was able to handle the green a bit better than David's team, shooting ahead to be 14-7 after 14 ends.

The key turning point in the game however was the 17th end with the scores 15-9 to Michael's team. David's team were holding three shots which would have put them within three shots with four ends to play. However, Michael had other ideas. He put down a drive which came into the head and with the assistance of three other bowls ended up next to the jack.

From there, it was very much a one sided affair with Peter, Rod G, Mal and Michael running away with the game. The final score was 20-9 in their favour, worthy winners of the grand final.

The following individual performances should be noted from the final. Peter Boyd was so consistent throughout the game. Both Michael and David lamented how even more devastating to an opposition's morale Peter would be if he tried a newer set of bowls. Rod Gamble had the read of the green and on the odd occasion Peter wasn't on the jack, Rod would be. He played an excellent second's game. David Curtis made his first finals appearance at West Pennant Hills having joined David's team when Michael Schwarcz was ill and unable to play. David bowled pretty well through the fours competition and he will definitely be one to watch and see how he develops from here having had this experience. Rod Foster was the best bowler on David's team yesterday. His backhand bowls were pretty close to flawless and beautiful to watch.
