A huge weekend of bowls at West Pennant Hills in the 2018 Thorby Major Singles. With a mixed bag of results, some close and some not, the sectional finals are shaping to be very exciting.
There were three round 2 games in Section 1 yesterday. Ian Corke was up against David Curtis. David and Ian stayed close for the first half of the game with neither player being more than three shots ahead of the other at any point. Then Ian clearly tired of this approach, picking up 13 shots in 9 ends. David pegged Ian back a bit with the pair of them exchanging singles shots only before Ian got a 4 on the penultimate end and then a 1 to take the game 31-14.
Michael Trimboli had drawn Clive Donohoo in this round. Michael and Clive started out reasonably closely with the scores tied at 7 shots all after 6 ends. Michael then put a few good ends together including a 4 on the 14th end to lead Clive 19-11. It was then Clive's turn to get a few runs on the board, catching Michael to leave the game 20-all after 20 ends. Clive kept this run going to be ahead by 5 before Michael stormed right back into the game to take the win 31-26.
The last round 2 game for Section 1 was between Ross Fitzpatrick and Michael Schwarcz in a rematch of their Minor Singles final only the week before. The first third of the game was very much in Ross's favour. After 12 ends, Ross led Michael 12-6 after picking up a 3 on the 11th end. This 5 to 6 shot deficit would remain through the second third of the game. Michael held Ross to single shot ends picking up a few multiples along the way. The score was 21-16 after 25 ends. In an ending not unlike last week's Minor Singles final, Michael made a late run. He came within 6 shots before Ross got the one shot he need to take the win 31-24.
In Section 2, there were two round 2 games to be played. The first was between Keith Robinson and David Wilson. Both players remarked that in the 13 years David had been bowling at WPH, this was the first time the pair had met in a singles game. David had a blistering start to the game, picking up a three and a four in quick succession to lead 13-5 after 11 ends. However, the master wasn't about to let the student get too cocky. Keith fired back with some short ends where he took full advantage. The next eleven ends saw the score tighten right up to 19-16 to David. The scores were tied on 22-all before a run of threes saw David take the win 31-24.
The other game in the Section 2 for round 2 was between Mal Horner and Chris Judkins. The game was completed in a rapid-fire 21 ends with Chris taking the lead on the third end and staying there for the rest of the match. Although Mal got a few multiple shot ends, Chris was too consistent when it mattered, picking up four shots on three separate ends. The closing stages of the game saw Chris pick up nine shots in 3 ends to go from 22 to 31. The final score was 31-13 in Chris's favour.
There were only three games in round three with Ross Fitzpatrick winning through to the Sectional Final on forfeit. The other Section 1 game was between Michael Trimboli and Ian Corke. It was clear from the start of this match that Michael had brought his A-game, putting together some great combinations to lead Ian 13-4 after 12 ends. Ian came back into the match with seven shots of 2 ends before Michael took off again. The key difference in this match was Ian was consistently picking up singles where as Michael was picking up multiples. As Michael stormed through the 20s on his way to 31, this was the most evident. Michael picked up 12 shots to Ian's 4 to take the win 31-18.

In Section 2, there were two games, the first being between David Wilson and Chris Judkins. Not dissimilar to his Round 2 game, David shot out of the gates early, playing long ends which frustrated Chris early on. David lead 17-4 before Chris won the 16 end and turned the whole game on its head. Short ends became the new norm on which Chris was devastatingly accurate. Over the next ten ends, Chris picked up 16 shots to David's three to tie the game 20-all and then take the lead 24-20 after 28 ends. David fought back though to ensure an entertaining end to the match with the scores tied 29-all. On the last end, David picked up two shots to win the end and the match 31-29.
In the other Section 2 game, Kevin Tuckerman was up against Darrin Ede. Your roving reporter hesitates to mention that this game was a very one-sided affair with Darrin in control from start to finish. Darrin restricted Kevin to four singles and a 3 on the penultimate end of the match, while putting together some good combos to score three 4 shot hauls through the game. The final score after 21 ends was 31-7 in Darrin's favour.
Thank you to all the markers and John Skidmore, Don Couch and Bob Cole for umpiring over the weekend.
The section finals between Michael Trimboli and Ross Fitzpatrick in Section 1 and David Wilson and Darrin Ede in Section 2 have been delayed to allow for Ross and Darrin to play in the Zone Presidents Singles.
