The first game of the 2019 Rod Roberts Major Pairs was between Dallas Palm, Ross Fitzpatrick and Keith Robinson, Dom Surace on Friday 21st June.
This was a slow game judging by when the other games finished and all social bowlers had vacated the green. The final score was a win to Dallas and Ross 25 to 7.
Rod Roberts was at the club to see the start of this year's championship.
The four second-round games played on Saturday 21st were a mixed bag of results.
Steve Arnold and Chris Judkins took on father and son team of Jim and Darrin Ede. This was the closest match of the day and one that had all spectators hanging on each delivery in the last ends. Steve and Chris led from the start and held the lead through to the 14th end. With the largest margin only 4 points on the 15th end, we were in for a close finish. On the 19th end, scores were locked at 15 all. The 20th end saw Steve and Chris pick up one shot to narrowly regain the lead. The last end and the game came down to the last bowl from Darrin. Holding 1 shot, Darrin put in a superb draw to take 2 shots and the game. The final score was a narrow win to Jim and Darrin, 17 to 16.
Martin Reedy and Don Stubbin had a tough game against David Jeffrey and Ian Corke. Martin and Don kept in touch with David and Ian for the first 10 ends, however, that was when the wheels fell off their wagon allowing David and Ian to race ahead. A late 6 point for Martin and Don brought them in close contention at 13 to 15, but it was not enough with David and Ian taking the final 3 ends and winning 23 to 13.
Dallas Palm and Ross Fitzpatrick started slowly against John Skidmore and Merv Cannon. By the 5th end, scores were level at 6 apiece and Ross was starting to get his eye in. From that point, the game was one-sided with Dallas and Ross extending their lead to a 35 to 13 win. The highlight was no wrongns from Ross.
Bhish Singh and Steve Hardwick had a good start against Clive Donohoo and Armchair, holding a 4 point lead at the 9th end. At this stage, Clive and Armchair got their act together by the 15th end, they led by 4 shots. Bhish and Steve fought back to level scores on the 18th at 18 each. Clive and Armchair finished the match off with superb draw shots to exclude Bhish and Steve from adding further to their score. A win to Clive and Armchair 23 to 18.
Congratulations to each of the teams progressing to the next round on Saturday 29th June.
