This year's final is the latest in a string of Major Singles finals for Darrin Ede. Victory would put his name on the shield for the 3rd time since commencing bowls in October 2013. Darrin was runner-up to Peter Eagle in 2015, winner in 2016 over Peter Eagle, winner in 2018 over Ross Fitzpatrick, runner-up in 2019 to Ross Fitzpatrick.
Geoff McIntosh started bowls with a small group of ex-Greenway Giants baseball players looking for a less physical sport. Geoff trialled bowls along with past members Steve Dalgairns, David Cannon, Ross Smith. and Dallas Palm, and a few others late in 2003.
The early stage of today's final was a close affair on a slow green (understandably slow given the recent rains) with Darrin holding a small margin of 10 to 8 after 11 ends.
Both players were intent on playing consistent accurate bowls and spectators were not disappointed in the standard on display.Heads changed hands frequently.
Darrin slowly pulled away from Geoff and by the 21st over it looked as though it was all over for Geoff, with Darrin holding 22 to 14 lead.
Geoff fought valiantly with several touchers and very tight bowling winning 4 of next 8 ends. In the end, Darrin maintained his lead to take the final 31 to 20.
Congratulations to Darrin Ede on achieving your 3rd Thorby Major Singles title, and to Geoff for making Darrin work hard to earn every point. Paraphrasing the words of the Democrat's Don Chipp, you 'kept the bastard honest'.
Thanks to Steve Arnold, umpire for the day and for the video of Darrin's winning bowl, and Rod Wright, marker for this final.
