5th Annual Stan Anderson Charity Bowls Day at St Johns Park

Sharon Houston, Jan Freeman, Heather Hardwick and Barbara Hazeltine from WPH Sports, backed by men from Merrylands RSL Bowling Club

Early in July, four ladies from WPH Sports were invited to play bowls at St Johns Park Bowling Club in a fund raiser for the State Emergency Services - 5th Annual Stan Anderson Charity Bowls Day. Earlier the ladies had met the CEO and a Director from St Johns Park at a Charity Day at Club Merrylands to raise money for the Starlight Foundation and they had mentioned we would be invited to their Charity Day.

The invitation arrived in due course and Sharon Houston, Jan Freeman, Heather Hardwick and Barbara Hazeltine took off on a very frosty morning to play bowls at St Johns Park. The ladies, as fairly new bowlers were possibly a little hesitant.  However with school holidays and only a small amount of traffic and thanks to Sharon and Rod Stewart, we made it to St Johns Park in very good time.

There were only a couple of other ladies teams there but our male opponents welcomed us and set us on the right track. We won both our games, the first against Kemps Creek and then against Merrylands RSL and these teams made it great fun. Of course there were raffles and auctions and everyone joined in the spirit of the day. The weather was absolutely perfect and great fun. With a lead like Sharon followed by Jan and Heather, we played exceptionally well and showed that bowls can be a fun game. Although most people would not know where WPH Sports was I’m sure they won’t forget us.
