Tuesday 2nd October will be remembered and talked about for generations.
The weather was great, the greens had been battened down and our 14 coaches were in their armour.
They were awaiting the 61 students aged between 5-12 years from Cherrybrook Primary ‘Out of School Care’ (OOSH) and believed the attack would commence at 2pm.
Max was in a panic, when finally at 2.10pm this Legion of children came through the side gate, lined up and gave us intimidating looks.
Our role was to instruct this group in how to bowl with biased rubber bowls. To reduce their strength in numbers we divided them into groups of 4, and each of our coaches had to instruct them in how to bowl to obstacles that had been set up on each rink. Each rink had a different obstacle (or target), and kids rotated continually around the green, repeating each rink on numerous occasions. One of our coaches prior to commencement (I can’t remember his name) but from Dural with a hearing aid, said ‘this event may be too intimidating for 5-year olds’. He changed his mind when two 5-year olds beat him!

The day went extremely well, and there were not too many casualties. Thanks must go to Brett Hughes (Bowls Australia) who gave us (and the enemy) our initial instructions, the 61 ankle biters who behaved extremely well, the caring 6 teachers and of course our 14 battling coaches. Well done and thanks. It was mentioned that this event could possibly occur again next year, but whenever it is, I believe Max will be away.
