Lawn bowls now a fun, ‘colourful’ sport for younger generations

The targeted age group for lawn bowls as a competitive sport has changed, according to Sharyn Renshaw, who represented Australia in Delhi at the 2010 Commonwealth Games and came away a silver medallist.

“People still think we walk around with the white stockings and hats – that is gone,” Ms Renshaw said.

“It is now all colours. It is just like soccer teams, the teams have their club colours and that’s what you compete in, shorts and caps.

“It’s so hard to change that perception.”

Ms Renshaw, who is the junior development officer at St Johns Park Bowling Club, which last week joined forces with Wallacia Bowling and Recreation Club to get more community involvement, approached Wallacia Public School in a bid to get students to try the sport.
