Men’s Major Pairs – Semi Final

Only one semi final game was played yesterday owing to numerous bowlers playing in the Zone 10 President's Singles competition (Congratulations to Gary Tyrrell who made it through his first game yesterday and is playing today at Merrylands in the next round).

The sides were defending champions Peter Eagle and Kevin Ross up against Keith Robinson and David Wilson. Both teams were looking forward to an enjoyable yet challenging afternoon of bowls and were not disappointed. A quick green coupled with a slight crosswind made mastering the conditions interesting. The teams stayed in touch with one another early on with the score 5-all after 5 ends.

After a few fantastic ends for Keith and David, the score had blown out to 17-7. However, Peter and Kevin were not about to take that lying down and stormed back into the game picking up 5 shots on one end after a masterful bowl from Peter putting the jack in the ditch behind a wall of his and Kevin's bowls. Heading into the 19th end, scores had tightened right up with 19-15 on the board. Keith and David were holding one shot, however it was surrounded by bowls from Peter and Kevin. In a super skip's bowl, Kevin deftly took out Keith's shot bowl to pick up three shots.

Despite several admirable efforts to dislodge David's shot bowl, Peter and Kevin were unsuccessful. The final score was 20-18 to Keith and David. Gentlemen, if I may say so, it was an absolutely great afternoon of bowls and a game which I will not forget in a hurry.

The other semi final between Gary Tyrrell / Rod Gamble and Gerard D'Costa / John Leonard will be played next Saturday (19th) in the morning. Best of luck to both teams. A full view of the draw for the 2014 Major Pairs can be found by clicking here.
