Men’s 2010 Major Singles

The draw for the Major Singles Championship includes 23 contestants and will run over 5 rounds starting Sunday 11th April. Check the draw here.

We have 147 members in the club and 23 entries equates to only 16% of members committed to play in the event that many consider the premier championship of any club.

Admittedly, there are a number of members that no longer bowl or bowl infrequently, however, that still leaves many bowlers that could enter the Championships. Why so few entries?

Leave your comments or suggestions on how we get more members to compete in club championships.

  1. wholey Moley. Don’t you know Mal & Dallas look to the future in everything they do
for betterment of the club? What do you do to help club towards the future?

  2. I agree that if you don’t compete you won’t improve.

But you didn’t ask why I didn’t compete. You asked why do players not enter competitions maybe should ask ourselfs instead trying to prove the comment wrong or agreeing with someones comments, take comments on board and look at ways to make Bowlers want enter. Look at the draw 7 grade 3 players play grade 5 and grade 7 but no grade 3 bowlers play grade 3 bowlers. Dosen’t that look a bit lopsided. Maybe one could have a graded draw.

Come on more suggestions to intice people to enter.

    • I won’t call myself The Mole or any other NON DE PLUME! I would prefer people know what I’m writing.
The draw for any event, in any club, is done at random. In fact, most sports are drawn this way with the exception of those trying to attract a television audience. Wimbledon is a noted example, players seeded number one and number two just happen to reach the final.
To satisfy any question of honesty I’ll be recommending our match committee pick 2 members from the floor at each future competition draw. That way most members will get a chance to see how it’s done over time.
I think “The Mole” would be a great asset to the Management Committee. Even though the elections aren’t due until August I’ll be happy to allocate some duties for you to assist us now.
EG: The Koala Carnival, The Turn Around Triples, Open Day and of course Appreciation Day.
We’d be happy to have you as part of the team and the hourly rate is excellent!!
All you have to do is come forward!

      Terry Barnett
PS: You must have missed the results in the Major Pairs, once again, a random draw!

      • Hi Terry

Thanks for the offer but no thanks (although i feel honoured by your suggestion), I work for the club in many ways. I don’t need to be on any committee to do my bit.

I can always give a hand when needed, I will know the time when to step forward and help.

I think pulling two people from the floor to witness the draw is over reacting. The people who do the draw are very trustworthy and some of the most honest people I know. I don’t see or hear anyone questioning this so I am bemused by this suggestion.

I notice you have not made any comment on Dallas’s and Mickie’s comments on membership which is more important whether I have NON DE PLUME or not as you put it.

        What are your thoughts?
What positive things are the Managemnt Committee going to do about this issue membership issue?

        Thanks for thought.

    • Dearest ‘the mole’,

I appreciate the point you make about the draw and see that from an analysis of the draw, one could draw that conclusion. However, as Terry points out the draw for every competition is random – it always has been and always will be. Given some of the results from the first round of the Major Singles, I would say that anyone can win anything. We have seen what could be referred to as ‘upset’ results with teams coming from underdog status to win championships since 2008.

I would encourage everyone to enter as many competitions as they can regardless of the others already nominated as the breadth of one’s championship experience can only spur them on to greater success in the future.

      The apprentice.

      • Hi “MA”

Great to see you have finally come out from the cupboard.

As always you give sensible comments.

I gather I have been misunderstood I was suggesting the bowlers look at the draw and justify their
non entry due to the bad spread. Then the competition comes again and they remember how lopsided the draw was if they only would realise if they had have entered it would have been a better spread. And as you say in the two competions there have been surprise outcomes.

        Glad to see, hear, read

  3. I agree 100% with Dallas. Here is a chance for all of those bowlers who don’t get too many opportunities to play against higher graded players to do so.

However, I also agree with the Mole when he says that many players will not commit because many of the initial rounds are played on Sundays. I would much prefer to see players not enter if they can’t play as per the schedule shown on the entry form. Entering and then forfeiting for minor reasons is not a good option.

Just one further question for the Mole, can you expand on what you mean by “To many arguments going on being heard or quoted to the lesser bowler so can’t be bothered”.

    Mal

  4. the mole,

I understand your comments about Sunday being a family day for some, and it being difficult to make a commitment for the length of the championship. I have no problem with this.

I do however have difficulty understanding the attitude that “it is too hard for a new bowler or a lower grade bowler”.

When I started bowling, I initially claimed “I only want to play social bowls”. With a little encouragement from senior club members, my attitude changed. I entered as many championships as I could (without compromising family commitments). At no stage did I do so believing I had a strong chance of winning. I did so because without entering, I had no chance. Additionally, it was by entering and being beaten by better players, that I was able to learn 1) about my capabilities and 2) how to improve my bowling.

I would like to see many more of the less experienced and lower grade bowlers enter championships with the attitude “I can have a go. If I lose the game, at least I will know that I have given it my best shot and learnt from the experience”.

I believe it is in the interests of the club for the experienced and higher grade bowlers to encourage entry to championships.

  5. Matches on Sundays which is normally a family day
To hard to make a committment.
Because of so few entries draw is to hard for a new bowler or a lower grade bowler.
To many arguments going on being heard or quoted to the lesser bowler so can’t be bothered.
Some people just like to bowl and have had enough of competition (sport & business) over the years.

    Thats for starters
