NATIONAL NEWS

The countdown is on – Bowls returns to free-to-air TV

This Sunday, the sport we love will return to free-to-air television with a bang.  “The Bowls Show” will commence on SBS on May 15, with a regular Sunday afternoon timeslot of 1:00pm.

The show will run for 20 consecutive weeks, until September 25, and will also be available to stream from the internet via SBS On Demand – SBS’s catch-up service for smart TVs, mobile phones, tablets and set-top boxes.

Regular segments on coaching, development, officiating, high performance and social bowls will be incorporated in the program and will provide a point of difference to the traditional event-only coverage shown in past broadcasts.

The show will include action from the recent Australian Premier League and World Cup as well as action from the upcoming Australian Open - which will also be broadcast live on Fox Sports on June 23 and 24 from 11.00am.

So tell your family, tell your friends, tell everyone you can that bowls is back in a big way on the box and via broadband.

Remember to mark May 15, and every following Sunday until September 25 in your calendar.

2016 Australian Open entries have closed – see you on the Gold Coast

Entries for this year’s Australian Open have now closed.  It is anticipated that the draw will be published next week.

While the events team is pulling together the details of all entrants, it’s already clear that this year will be the biggest on record, with a huge amount of bowlers eager to take part in the World’s Biggest Bowls Festival.

The Australian Open is open to every bowler in the country and with 544 prize money places and new Over-60s Men’s and Women’s Pairs events, there is an even greater chance of sharing in the quarter of a million dollars in prize money.

Apart from the prize money, the Gold Coast event has now become a festival of the sport and a celebration of all that is wonderful about bowls, bringing together bowlers from all levels.

All entrants play each event in a sectional format followed by knockout rounds, meaning that all entrants are guaranteed multiple matches in every discipline.

The final two days Australian Open, June 23 and 24, will be broadcast live on Fox Sports – see even if you’re not participating, you can still watch the winners be crowned.

LOCAL NEWS

Mats and Jacks at Great Prices

Bowls Australia’s supporter Aero Bowls has a special deal on mats and jacks for a limited time – a combo deal of a brand new mat and jack for $25 (for both together).  It should be pointed out that the mats are blue in colour and the jacks are white – both of great quality.  If you’d like to place an order, let me know and I will be able to organize free delivery of the equipment when I am next in your area.

RDNS Health & Wellbeing Sessions

The Royal District Nursing Service (RDNS) have been running informative health and wellness sessions in bowling clubs, through a partnership with Bowls Australia.

There is an opportunity for your club to host one of these sessions, which provide a great opportunity to improve the health of members while potentially growing membership.

A facilitator will come and conduct these sessions at your club for your members and anyone else in the community who may also wish to attend.

RDNS will work in partnership with local community providers and advertise the sessions via their vast networks to help encourage extra people through the door.

The topics that your Club can choose from are:

  1. Positive Ageing
  2. Skin Health
  3. Bladder Health
  4. Stress and Anxiety
  5. Nutrition
  6. Intro to CPR and Defibrillation

The cost is just a gold coin donation per person and your club can pick the day/time of the week you would like to host a session.

Please drop me an email if you would like to tee up a session at your blub.

Sydney Bowls Portal

A reminder that the following website… http://sydneybowls.webs.com includes:

-      72 ideas on recruitment and retention
-       a map of Sydney Bowling Clubs
-       a listing of all social bowls games in Sydney

If you notice any errors with respect to your Club’s details, let me know and I will happily update the file and repost each month.

Sporting Schools

Bowls Australia is excited to be part of the Sporting Schools Program that is seeing many Australian primary schools given the option to select Bowls as a sport for their school.

The Sporting Schools initiative allows primary schools to apply for funding to conduct four or more sessions of a selected sport (i.e. bowls) for their students.

The schools get funding to pay for coaches and to buy a Jr. Jack Attack Kit – which allows them to continue to conduct bowls within the school after the official sessions have been completed.

We know that many clubs and schools will already have a relationship – if you are working with a school or have done so in the past, ask the school to contact the staff at Bowls Australia atsportingschools@bowlsaustralia.com.au

Become a Sporting Schools Coach

If anyone at your club is interesting in becoming a Sporting Schools Coach, they can register here at https://www.sportingschools.gov.au/forms/member-registration – they are then endorsed by BA assuming they meet the criteria.

Bowls Australia have engaged Coach Approach to manage our Sporting Schools workforce. Coaches will be paid up to $30/hour.

As part of the requirements for Sporting Schools, each coach needs a Working with Children Check meeting their states requirements and also requires insurance.

Your Club’s insurance will only cover sessions that are conducted at the Club - one of your members going to a school is not covered by your insurance.

This is where Coach Approach comes in to play - Coach Approach provides the insurance, bills the school and pays the coach.  For any more information, please contact Bowls Australia atsportingschools@bowlsaustralia.com.au.
