Under gray skies and following a week of inclement weather, the two semi-finals were played on a green that most callers at Royal Randwick would call a heavy track.
In the first semi-final, Peter Boyd, Merv Cannon, Ross Iredale, and Mal Horner were feeling confident coming off the back of a big win in the first round. They faced off against Harold Holden (substituting for David Jeffery), Keith Robinson, Max Walters, and Dom Surace. These two teams turned out to be pretty evenly matched throughout the majority of the match. When one team would drop a point, they would then pick it up the next end with the lead moving back and forth between the two teams. Evidence of this can be seen in the scores after the first seven ends... five-all.
The next seven ends didn't do much to change the score either, with Dom's team picking up a few multiples to lead 13-12 after 14 ends. It was in this last third of the game when it became clear that all bets were off. Dom's team combined brilliantly to pick up a four shot haul on both the 17th and 19th ends. This put the result beyond doubt despite a couple of golden moments from Mal's team. The final score was 24-14 to Dom's team.
In the second semi-final, Les Watkins, Michael Schwarcz, David Roles, and Kevin Tuckerman headed into the semi with a solid win over Darrin Ede's team. Trying to stop their march towards the Shield were Ross Fitzpatrick, Dallas Palm, Geoff McIntosh, and David Wilson. After dropping the first end, David's team were determined for there to be no repeating that. And for the next eight ends this was the case. After leading 10-1 after 9 ends, Kevin's team were desperate to get some runs on the board. The next seven ends, were all Kevin's team. Despite David's team picking up four shots, Kevin's team picked up ten to have the scores at 14-11 after 18 ends.

This must have been a bit too close for comfort for David's team who won the last three ends. And not just won them, but picked up five shots on the 20th end. Both teams put in some good bowls and the final score isn't reflective of how close the game got in points. The final score was 23-11 to David's team.
