Hi there,
Happy new bowls season everyone – hope you are excited about another bowls year that is about to get into full swing. I know that some Clubs have already started Club Championships and Pennant trials while many others will kick off in the coming week or two.
I had an unusual finish to 2014 to say the least – it started with a case of rotavirus/gastro which was generously shared around our family of four …which led to an operation to fix a tear in my oesophagus …and because things happen in threes …a car crashed through our dining room!! Luckily, the family had moved out of the room a few minutes earlier, and while shaken, were all OK. Being aware that others have dealt with worse predicaments …it’s just another reminder not to take anything for granted and be delighted with the family/friends/things that we have. Health and happiness to all for 2015!
As always, I’m happy (to escape my temporary caravan park cabin accommodation) and visit your Club and discuss Jack Attack, business plans …or to show you some funny photos of a car inside a house – please drop me a return email or call 0408 798 272 to arrange a meeting. Remember that I am a FREE resource for your Club to call on.
Jack Attack Sweeping The Nation
Jack Attack, the new fast-paced fun version of bowls, was officially launched nationwide in November …and in just two months, 53 Clubs around Australia have signed on for the program. Jack Attack is a nationally branded program designed to attract bowlers into your Club by providing all bowlers (experienced and first-timers) an opportunity to compete in a structured short-game format.
In these days of the Big Bash, some have described Jack Attack as being to the sport of Bowls what Twenty20 (Big Bash) is to the sport of Cricket – a way to introduce new players to the sport that may not be able to commit 4-5 hours to a game. Jack Attack is a 60-75 minute game that is played in a relaxed and fun atmosphere.
Five Sydney Clubs will be running Jack Attack programs from January/February…
- Club Grandviews – on Thursday evenings, from Jan 29
- Avalon Beach BC – on Friday evenings, from Jan 30
- Club Mount Lewis – on Thursday evenings, from Feb 12
- The Hills BC – on Wednesday evenings, from Feb 18
- Artarmon BC – on Thursday evenings, from Feb 19

Let Me Help Bowlers Find You
In my travels around Sydney, I often get asked a question like “…If I’m looking for a game on a Someday morning/afternoon/evening, where in the area can I find a game?” I’m hoping to build a resource that can be updated annually and posted for all bowlers living in or visiting Sydney to easily access.
So far around 40% of Clubs have been good enough to complete the file attached to let me know when your Club’s social bowls is played.
If this does not sound familiar, could a representative of your Club please assist by spending a few minutes completing the spreadsheet attached? – it has been saved in an old Excel format so hopefully no one will have problems opening it. The file, titled “Sydney Clubs Social Bowls v2”, contains instructions within on how to complete it and I’m sure most will find it fairly self-explanatory. Thanking you, in advance.
New Laws of Bowls – Effective Now
From January 1, some new laws of the sport came into effect. The main ones that affect regular play include…
- POSITION ON THE MAT – Changed from “a player should be standing on the mat with one foot fully on the mat” to “before delivery, a player must be standing on the mat with all or part of at least one foot on the mat. At the moment they deliver the jack or a bowl, the player must have all or part of one foot on or above the mat”
- ABSENTEE PLAYERS IN A SIDES GAME - Domestic Regulation has been created that provides for the team with one player short to play less bowls – e.g. in fours play the team short plays 6 bowls (lead, third & skip) against 8 bowls.
- PLAYERS’ DUTIES - Member National Authorities can transfer the skip’s duties described in law 40.1.7 to other members of the team. However, they must make sure that the duties are transferred to players whose positions, in order of play, are the same in each team. Domestic Regulation has been created that provides that in fours play the score card is kept by the second of each team. (Yay!)
A more detailed summary of the changes to the laws can be found via the following link… http://www.bowlsaustralia.com.au/News/laying-down-the-law-117272

Sydney Bowlers in the 2015 NSW/ACT National Training Centre Squad
A stock of future national representatives has bolstered the NSW/ACT National Training Centre squad announced recently. National Training Centre Coach Gary Willis confirmed a 21-strong NSW/ACT NTC squad for the new year, with an injection of young talent bolstering the already dominant contingent. Six of the sport’s brightest young stars have earned inclusion into the squad for 2015, while six incumbents have not retained their positions in the Bowls Australia and Australian Sports Commission funded program.
The 2015 NSW/ACT NTC Squad include the Sydney bowlers…

State Pennants – Changes to Conditions of Play
With talk of Pennants dominating many conversations around bowls notice boards at this time of year, hopefully your members are aware of a few key changes to this year’s Conditions of Play with respect to State Pennants. A summary of the main changes for the Men’s State Pennants can be found here… http://www.rnswba.org.au/RNSWBAstores/REFERENCELIB/1817/ATTRFILE_File1/C18_14_2015_Conditions_Of_Play_Clarification.pdf

Mandatory Working With Children Checks
Due to legislation amendments in 2013, it is now a requirement for people working or volunteering with children under the age of 18 to have a working with children check. The Working with Children Check provides a unique number (the WWC number) to a person who has been cleared to work with children. The WWCC application process involves a national police check and a review of findings of workplace misconduct. The result is either a clearance to work with children for five years, or a bar against working with children. All new applicants for child-related work such as Coaches must provide a WWC application or clearance number to their club. This number must be verified online by the club or board managing the club before they can start work. For existing employees and volunteers there is now a legislated phase in for people who work in sports between April 1, 2015 and March 31, 2016. For more useful information on this topic, please refer to the following Women’s Bowls NSW webpage… http://www.womensbowlsnsw.org/News/mandatory-working-with-children-checks-163176
