Hi there,
With the recent warm weather, it certainly doesn’t feel like we are just over a month away from Winter. On the greens, the action continues warm up, as many players’ Pennants and Championship seasons head towards the pointy end.
Please find the latest monthly update following, a little later than usual as I was attending to some professional development last week.
…and as always … HELP ME, HELP YOU by sending an email or calling 0408 798 272 for advice or to arrange a meeting.
I am also endeavoring to attend as many Zone and District delegates meetings at the moment – please feel free to invite me along if I haven’t dropped in on one of yours as yet in 2016.

The Australian Sides Championships (the annual Interstate teams competition) was played at the Queanbeyan and Queanbeyan RSL Bowling Clubs earlier this month. Food For Thought... on Recruitment (Part 2)
Last month, I promised to share a range of recruitment and retention ideas in this month’s update …and so here they are – a list of 72 ideas can be found by clicking on the link below.
http://sydneybowls.webs.com/Recruitment%20&%20Retention%20Ideas.docx
The ideas have been gathered from a number of sources including some evidence-based methods that have delivered results at Sydney Bowling Clubs – I am sure you will find an idea or three that you can try at your Club.
Sydney Social Bowls Calendar
The Sydney Social Bowls Calendar has once again been updated – thank you to those that sent through corrections. You can find an updated copy and a map of every Sydney Bowling Club at the website below. The Club map now includes our good friends in Ingleburn, Campbelltown and Camden.
Again, if you notice any errors with respect to your Club’s details, let me know and I will happily update the file and repost each month.
Good for Current Members, Good for Finding New Members – RDNS Health & Wellbeing Sessions
The Royal District Nursing Service (RDNS) have been running informative health and wellness sessions in Bowling Clubs.
There is an opportunity for your Club to host one of these sessions. For Clubs, it provides a great opportunity to improve the health of our members while potentially growing membership. A facilitator will come and conduct these sessions at your club for your members and anyone else in the community who may also wish to attend. The RDNS will work in partnership with local community providers and advertise the sessions via their vast networks to help encourage extra people through the door.
The topics that your Club can choose from are:
- Positive Ageing
- Skin Health
- Bladder Health
- Stress and Anxiety
- Nutrition
- Intro to CPR and Defibrillation
The cost is just a gold coin donation per person and your Club can pick the day/time of the week you would like to host a session. Please drop me an email if you would like to tee up a session at your Club.
Mats and Jacks at Great Prices - Aero
Bowls Australia’s supporter Aero Bowls has a special deal on mats and jacks at the moment – a combo deal of a brand new mat and jack for $25 (for both together). It should be pointed out that the mats are blue in colour and the jacks are white – both of great quality. If you’d like to place an order, let me know and I may even be able to organize free delivery of the equipment when I am next in your area. This special deal may not last long.
Sporting Schools
https://www.sportingschools.gov.au/sports/bowls-australia
Bowls Australia is excited to be part of the Sporting Schools Program that is seeing many Australian primary schools given the option to select Bowls as a sport for their school.
The Sporting Schools initiative allows primary schools to apply for funding to conduct four or more sessions of a selected sport (i.e. bowls) for their students.
They get funding to pay for coaches and to buy a Jr. Jack Attack Kit – which allows them to continue to conduct bowls within the school after the official sessions have been completed.
We know that many clubs and schools will already have a relationship – if you are working with a school or have done so in the past, ask the school to contact the staff at Bowls Australia atsportingschools@bowlsaustralia.com.au
Becoming a Sporting Schools Coach
If anyone at your club is interesting in becoming a Sporting Schools Coach, they can register here at https://www.sportingschools.gov.au/forms/member-registration – they are then endorsed by BA assuming they meet the criteria. Bowls Australia have engaged Coach Approach to manage our Sporting Schools workforce. Coaches will be paid up to $30/hour.
As part of the requirements for Sporting Schools, each coach needs a Working with Children Check meeting their states requirements and also requires insurance. Your Club’s insurance will only cover sessions that are conducted at the Club - one of your members going to a school is not covered by your insurance. This is where Coach Approach comes in, Coach Approach provides the insurance, bills the school and pays the coach. For any more information, please contact Bowls Australia at sportingschools@bowlsaustralia.com.au.
