Great Scotts – The World Champions of Champions Singles ‘Double’

Australian duo Natasha Scott and Scott Thulborn were crowned World Singles Champion of Champions at Helensvale last month.

The Australian players were unstoppable in each of their finals.  Newcastle-based Scott won the opening two sets 10-6 and 7-4 to win the ladies final over Brunei’s Amalia Matali while Thulborn beat Wales bowler Jonathan Tomlinson 9-6, 7-4.

It is the first time Australia has won gold in both events since Brett Wilkie and Kelsey Cottrell achieved the feat in 2009.

It continues an incredible run of form for Natasha who has won the Australian Open, Australian Indoor Championships, World Triples Championship, Golden Nugget and Moama Premier Pairs Class in the past 12 months.

Update From The Bowls NSW Boardroom

http://www.rnswba.org.au/news/enews-articles/board-update

Davis’s Slice of History

Proving that he really is a superstar on the rise, the twice winner of the Under 18 Australian Male Bowler of the Year, Jono Davis (from Dubbo Railway) has recently become the youngest ever winner of the NSW Champion of Club Champions Singles after he defeated Ray Pearse (Cabramatta) in the final at The Rules Club Wagga in last month. At the age of 16, Davis eclipses Cameron Curtis (then Mullumbimby) who won the title in 1988 as a 17 year-old. Curtis also won the title in 1989 (then at The Hills).

Davis got the early running in the final, jumping out to a 13-4 lead. Pearse clawed his way back into the game, trailing 13-22 Pearse won three ends in a row to close the lead to 19-22 before Davis applied the blowtorch and ran away to win 31-21.

In the Men’s Champion of Champions Pairs Final, it was a win to Daniel Matheson and Michael Cronin (East Cessnock) over the pairing of Blake Hopper and Jesse Norohna (Warilla).  In one of the tightest State Finals in recent times, the scores were locked at 17-all after 21 ends.  The East Cessnock pairing were able to secure one shot on the final end after an almost perfect jack trail from Norohna that didn’t quite come off.

Bowls Premier League #4 – Sydney Lions are Champions!

First-time finalists, the BCiB Sydney Lions roared to victory in the BPL04 Final series in order for them to lift the trophy and claim the $25,000 first prize cheque.

The BCiB Sydney Lions have become the fourth franchise in four instalments of the Bowls Premier League to win the coveted trophy after a stunning performance in the Final defeating the 2013 Champions, the Murray Steamers.

The team of Aron Sherriff, Ben Twist, Karen Murphy and Coach Gary Willis, blitzed the preliminary rounds to finish on top of the table, but then stumbled in their first semi-final against the Steamers, only to win the next match against the Adelaide Endurance and then win the rematch against the Steamers.

Congratulations to Aron, Ben, Karen and Gary as well as the entire team at Club Mount Lewis (home of the Lions), including the board led by Fred Ayoub and Bowls Co-ordinator, David Ellis, who have been striving for this title since its inception.  Having been in the Lions’ Den on finals night, I can tell you that their passionate supporters almost lifted the roof off the Club when the final bowl went down.

The Bowls Premier League will return to our screens in February (BPL05), this time hosted in New Zealand.

Jack Attacking In Sydney

Jack Attack is to Bowls what Twenty20 (BigBash) is to Cricket.  It’s fun, it’s easy to get involved and best of all it’s fast, with games complete in around an hour, which makes it easier for new players to get involved.  The format and rules are almost identical to the Bowls Premier League.

Ingleburn BC will be launching their first Jack Attack season this evening.  Other Clubs such as Avalon Beach BC, Club Mount Lewis, Lane Cove BC, Club Grandviews, Cabramatta BC and Taren Point BC will be holding Jack Attack competitions in the coming summer months.  Call any of these Clubs (or myself on 0409 798 272) for more information about the competitions.

I am sure that you would have heard the line from non-bowlers that bowls is ‘only a sport for old people’.  Jack Attack is anything but that.  Set play, music, power plays, FUN!

It’s bowls, but not as you know it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GPPIJXrQ4A4
