Hi there,
Wow …what a great month it’s been for sports-lovers, with the FIFA World Cup, Wimbledon, Tour de France, the Blues winning the Origin, Waratahs & Wallabies winning matches and the Swans going for 12-wins-in-a-row. Now, it’s only 13 sleeps until the Commonwealths Games! – I know this is one little pasty-white duck that is looking forward to some sleep in August.
The astute may have also noticed the acronym change in this month’s email heading …the Community Development Officer program has been rebranded as the Regional Bowls Manager program – to quote the media announcement, the name change “is a better reflection of the pivotal role that (the Regional Bowls Managers) undertake within the community such as growing the sport of bowls to new audiences, creating a greater awareness of the benefits of participation and assisting bowls clubs in a variety of business operations. As such, I am now your local Regional Bowls Manager.
Please find below some of the latest bowls news, results, tips and resources. I’m happy to visit your Club and discuss any of the following items in greater detail – please drop me a return email or call 0408 798 272 to arrange a meeting. Remember that I am a FREE resource for your Club to call on.
You can also follow me on Twitter (@chriswallace73) as I’ve just begun regularly tweeting good news stories/photos from my Club visits.

More Inter-Club Competitions
If your Club’s Pennants season is now over and your players are keen for some more inter-Club matches, remember that the Bowls NSW Club Challenge is just around the corner. It is a seven-a-side competition that has Men’s Divisions, Women’s Divisions and Mixed Divisions - the divisions allow for players of varying standards (based on Pennant gradings). Sectional play is played locally, before sectional winners play in Regional Finals and then possibly State Finals. Entries close for this competition on August 14. JUNIOR JACK ATTACK
A Junior Jack Attack kit is the perfect resource to use with children for school activities, barefoot bowls groups, open days and any other activity where kids may be trying the sport of bowls. In each Junior Jack Attack kit are: 32 small-sized kid-friendly bowls (16 green & 16 gold), 50 cones, 8 mats, 8 jacks, 1 target mat, activity cards and a wheelie bag to put them all in …all this for just $400 (incl. GST) – freight is additional. Why not ask a Club sponsor to purchase a kit for your Club? – their business name can always be transposed across the side of the large kit bag.
A few Clubs such as Northmead, Guildford and Merrylands have already used these kits and the kids really took a liking to the modified bowls and targets.
Junior Jack Attack kits can be purchased directly from Bowls Australia’s E-Store via the following link… https://shopdesq.imgstg.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=main&OrgID=16084

New Player Ranking System – Clubs Events Can Achieve Ranking Status
On July 1, Bowls Australia introduced a new national player ranking system where fairness, equity, events graded on prize money levels and a stronger emphasis on major event results with a weighted points system are the cornerstones of the new system. The philosophy of the new system is to provide equal and just opportunity for bowlers across the country to earn ranking points with the highest ranked player, both male and female, to be crowned Australia’s number one player for the year. The new four-tier ranking structure will allow Clubs to apply for ranking status for any of their events that offer more than $3,000 in prize money. Good News Competition – Win one of 2 x $50 Coles Myer Vouchers for your Club
In my travels, I often hear of things that Clubs are doing well and I like to share these stories with others. If you have a good news story which could include…
- how your Club has gained a group of new members
- how you have increased participation through a new or modified bowls activity (social, barefoot, tournament or championship)
- or any other good news that you think the wider bowling community could benefit from
…then please let me know. Even if you have shared these stories with me in the past, that will not discount you from winning the following prize. Two lucky Clubs that submit good news stories will win a $50 Coles Myer voucher each (that the club can use towards a raffle). They do not necessarily have to be the best stories - I will randomly draw two winning Clubs from all the submissions received that meet the criteria above. Winners will be announced in next month’s Update and I will personally deliver the prizes shortly afterwards.
National Bowls Census – Deadline has been extended to July 31 – Please Help
The National Bowls Census is the game’s main information system for future development and benchmarking of the game. Thank you to the Sydney Clubs that have completed the Census so far: Leichhardt, Cronulla RSL, Mount Lewis, Dural CC, Manly, Dee Why, West Pennant Hills, Mounties Fairfield, Campsie South, Double Bay & The Hills. Hopefully, I can thank a few more Clubs next month.
