Update from the Sydney RBM – November 2014

Posted on 14 November 2014 by Dallas Palm

APL02posterHi there,

It’s great to see many Clubs taking advantage of daylight saving to run twilight bowls activities.  Those Clubs that have tried it for the first time (or for the first time in a while) are finding that there are quite a few bowlers looking for game outside of business / child-minding hours.

Speaking of twilight …LIVE twilight and night bowls will be on the TV next week – read the first article below for more details.

This month, I am also asking for a favour from you …so that I can build a resource that will hopefully be of use to many bowlers looking for a game around Sydney (and hopefully bring more bowlers to your Club) …please refer to the second article and the spreadsheet attached.

I’m happy to visit your Club and discuss twilight bowls, business plans or any of the following items in greater detail – please drop me a return email or call 0408 798 272 to arrange a meeting.  Remember that I am a FREE resource for your Club to call on.

Australian Premier League – November 18 to 21 – Bowls on TV

Live bowls is back on TV next week.  The second instalment of the revolutionary APL competition will feature 20 hours of live broadcast coverage - five hours each night from 6pm on Tuesday 18th to Friday 21st November - with an additional 45 hours of replays shown over three Fox Sports channels on the days following.

With the expansion of the competition to include two new franchise teams - the Moama Bowling Club based Murray Steamers and Club Helensvale aligned Gold Coast Hawks, live coverage of APL02 has been bolstered for the second season.

A poster is attached that you can display within your Club to help draw your members attention to the event.

To stay up-to-date with the latest APL02 action…

- drop in at a Bowling Club / friend’s place with Foxtel

- head to www.australianpremierleague.com.au

- follow @APLbowls on Twitter, and

- 'like' facebook.com/australianpremierleague

For the Clubs with Foxtel, it is a great opportunity to encourage members to watch bowls at your Club.  Remember that the home of the Sydney Lions, Club Mount Lewis, is running a ‘best seats in the house’ promotion where you could win your way rink-side to the 2015 APL on the Gold Coast - refer to the following link…

Where to Bowl in Sydney

In my travels around Sydney, I often get asked a question like “…If I’m looking for a game on a Someday morning/afternoon/evening, where in the area can I find a game?”  While there are a couple of good resources out there like www.mybowlsclubs.com.au that do their level best to gather that information, not all of these resources are complete/up-to-date.  I’m hoping to build a resource that can be updated annually and posted for all bowlers living in or visiting Sydney to easily access.  Could a representative of your Club please assist by spending a few minutes completing the spreadsheet attached? – it has been saved in an old Excel format so hopefully no one will have problems opening it.  The file, titled “Sydney Clubs Social Bowls”, contains instructions within on how to complete it and I’m sure most will find it fairly self-explanatory.  If someone can send your Club’s version of this spreadsheet back to me by the end of November, I can have the resource ready for public view in time for 2015.  Thanking you, in advance. Jack Attack Is Here & Goes Nationwide

Jack Attack will be officially launched nationwide next week in parallel with the second season of the APL.  Jack Attack is a nationally branded program designed to attract bowlers into your Club by providing both new and current bowlers an opportunity to compete in a structured 6-8 week short-game format.

There will be promotion of Jack Attack during the TV coverage of the APL and the www.jackattack.com.au website is now live, where you can find Jack-loads of information about the program.

If your Club is interested in getting in on the ground floor of this exciting initiative that has already been taken up by more than 20 Clubs around the country in the first fortnight of the website going live, then please give me a call and I will happily visit your Club to talk Jack Attack.

If you missed Mick Malloy on The Project two weeks ago talking about both APL and Jack Attack, here is the link to watch a good six-minute prime-time plug for bowls…

National RankingsGet Ranked!

Is your Club missing out on an opportunity to gain National Ranking points for your tournament entrants.  On July 1, Bowls Australia introduced a new national player ranking system.  The new four-tier ranking structure will allow Clubs to apply for ranking status for any of their events that offer more than $3,000 in prize money.  Carlingford, The Hills and Cabramatta have all run events that have allowed players to achieve ranking points and Mount Lewis will run a ranked event in 2015.

For more details on how your Club can be involved and for the current leaderboards, please refer to the following webpage…

Sydney Winners

It’s been another big month of big events with plenty more results for Sydney bowlers to be proud of, so many that I will list them briefly this month…

-          Katrina Wright (Taren Point) won the National Champion of Champion Singles event, hosted by Taren Point.  Katrina joins Brett Wilkie in the history books as the only players to win the three biggest singles events in Australia, the Australian Open Singles, the Australian Indoor Singles and the Australian Champion of Champion Singles crowns

-          At the National Champion of Champion Pairs, Kay Moran and Karen Murphy (Cabramatta) won their section and narrowly lost the Final to the pairing from Queensland

-          Yesterday, Kenta Treacher won the NSW Men’s Champions of Champions Singles and will go on to represent NSW at the National CofC Singles next year.  Good luck to all the Sydney pairings that will play in the NSW CofC Pairs Finals played at Nowra later today.

-          Well done to the 24 City Men (too many to mention individually) who defeated their Country counterparts in the annual City vs Country series played at Cabramatta last weekend.  City won 23 points (+47 shots) to Country’s 13 points (-47).  The Metro Women lost narrowly to the Country Women in early October.  The Junior City vs. Country will be played at Cabramatta on 22-23 November – why not head down to watch some future champions in action?

-          At the recent Women’s Bowls NSW Championships…

o   Janet Newell (Harbord) was Runner-Up in the State Singles

o   Maelene Mihaere and Beverley Pendleton (Ashfield) were Runners-Up in the Pairs

o   Maryann Parcell, Corinne Crouche, Anne Johns  and Kelsey Cottrell (St. John’s park) were Runners-Up in the Open Fours

o   Iris Kampel, Karen Levinson, J. Welton and Barbara Shotland (Double Bay) were Runners-Up in the Senior Fours

-          At the Men’s State Championships…

o   Geoff Rymer, Shannon White, Mark Berghofer and Brent Norman (St. John’s Park) won the State Fours

o   Murray Chapman, Jake Chapman & Craig Donaldson (Taren Point) won the Triples

o   David Shearer and Crawford Linton (Belrose) won the Senior Pairs

-          Nathan Severino (Engadine) & Damien Lewis (Taren Point) were runners up at the Bowls NSW Rookie Pairs event

Australian Open

Another reminder that entries are open for the richest event in world bowls, the 2015 Australian Open with $225,000 in prize money.  There’s no need to partake in an arduous qualifying tournament any more - simply enter online or through the manual entry process and you’ll be guaranteed a place in the main draw.

Disciplines include men’s and women’s singles, pairs and fours, Under-18 boys’ and girls’ singles, bowlers with a disability singles and pairs.  Visit the Australian Open website for more information…

Interesting Bowls Participation Stat

Looking back through the 2013 Bowls Census which was completed with the help of Bowling Club administrators (thank you to those that did) …there were over 151,000 people that played lawn bowls in Sydney that year …and yet we had around 19,600 bowling members of Sydney Clubs in mid-2013.  So where is the ‘missing 85%’?  They are not missing as such – they are the barefoot bowlers, the corporate bowlers, the school groups, that may not necessarily want to sign up to the value proposition of being a full bowling member of your Club …but none-the-less still enjoy the sport occasionally.  Just like I enjoy the odd-game of mini golf or ten pin bowling …but I’m not about to join a ten pin league tomorrow (I may sometime down the track, just not tomorrow) …and yet in the meantime, I’ll happily hand my hard-earned over to Mr Putt-Putt or Mrs Ten Pin and will probably take my family along to play and spend as well.

Is your Club missing out on this participation (and associated trade)?  Happy to come out and discuss/explore this further at your Club.

Junior Jack Attack Kits – Kids Love ‘em

A Junior Jack Attack kit is the perfect resource to use with school activities, barefoot bowls groups, open days and any other activity where children may be trying the sport of bowls.  In each Junior Jack Attack kit are: 32 small-sized kid-friendly bowls (16 green & 16 gold), 50 cones, 8 mats, 8 jacks, 1 target mat, activity cards and a wheelie bag to put them all in  …all this for less than the cost of one new set of bowls - just $400 (incl. GST) – freight is additional.  Why not ask a Club sponsor to purchase a kit for your Club? – their business name can always be transposed across the side of the large kit bag.  Junior Jack Attack kits can be purchased directly from Bowls Australia’s E-Store via the following link…  https://shopdesq.imgstg.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=main&OrgID=16084

If you would like a closer look at the kit, then please let me know and I will happily visit your Club to demonstrate.

Turn of the Year Tourney

I wouldn’t normally single out a tournament to promote, but for this one I’ll make an exception given its co-ordinated by a Zone Association.  The 57th Annual Turn of the Year Tournament not only provides some great competition at a time when there is not a lot of bowls activity in Sydney (Dec 27th to Jan 4th), it is also an event that is open to all registered bowlers (Men and Women) in multiple disciplines (Singles, Pairs and Triples).  If you’re interested, please refer to the link below for more details.  Entries close soon.
