Round 2 of the 2019 Mixed Pairs was played under clear skies and a light breeze - at least for most of the afternoon. Better conditions could not be asked for.
In the first match between Max Walters and Kaye Eagle against Rosemary Roles and Ian Corke, it was a little hard to see Rosemary and Ian for the dust they left! Rosemary and Ian shot out to of the blocks and by halfway held a significant lead of 22 to 4. With Max and Kaye winning 5 ends of the second half they managed to close the gap to a loss of 17 to 29.
The second match of Kaye Bailey and Dallas Palm against Kay Iredale and Kevin Tuckerman was a much closer event. Whilst Kay and Dallas pulled ahead on several occasions, Kay and Kevin refused to be left behind and found ways to level the scores - 3 times in fact. Holding a slight lead of 22 to 17 after 18 ends, Kaye and Dallas changed their strategy putting Kay and Kevin under pressure to pick up multi-point ends. The final score was a 25 to 18 win to Kaye and Dallas.
The most exciting match (at least at the finish) was the Elaine and Jim Ede versus Wendy Wise and Ross 'Armchair' Iredale match. Wendy and Armchair lept out the starter's gate to a commanding lead of 12 to 2 after 9 ends. The tables turned with Elaine and Jim taking 10 points in 3 ends to level the scores at 12 all after 12 ends. Wendy and Ross found a second wind, adding 8 shots over the next 3 ends with the scores 12 to 20 in favour of Armchair. Jim and Elaine were not satisfied with this and pulled the score back to 19 to 23 after 20 ends. With Armchair holding shots on the 21st end, Jim inspected the head and declared he had "none and Buckleys" chances of producing a draw let alone a win. These words proved apocryphal! On his last bowl, Jim converted, picking up a 4 to level the scores at 23 each! An extra end resulted in a win to Wendy and Armchair by 1 shot, 24 to 23.
