On Wednesday 28th September, which turned out to be a rain free sunny day regardless of the weather forecast, the final of the Mixed Triples was played.
After winning their way through three rounds to reach the final, the two teams consisted of Sharon Houston, Rod Houston and Chuck Fung versus Bernice Francis, Martin Reedy and John Skidmore.
Chuck’s team got off to a quick start winning the first 3 Ends giving them a 3v0 lead. John’s team then won the next End with a score of 3 shots to even the score. Chuck’s team then won the next End to regain the lead 5v3.
John’s team decided to step up a gear and win the next 4 Ends bringing the score to 9v5 in their favour.
Now the game was getting very serious with both teams winning several high scoring Ends, Chuck’s team won a 3, 3, 2, 1 and a 4. John’s team won a 4. By the 11th End the scores were Chuck 18, John 13. John and his team were not having any of this and fought on to win the next 4 Ends bringing the score to 20v18 in John’s favour. Chuck then won the next End with 2 shots, bringing the score to an even 20v20 on the 20th End.
Both teams could now smell victory! As the last end progressed, Sharon and Rod managed to get several bowls near the jack. However, by the time the skips took their turn on the mat there was an impenetrable wall of short bowls severely limiting clear access to the jack. This made John’s task of getting a bowl onto the jack almost impossible. Although he tried valiantly, he was unable to breach the wall. The last End was won convincingly by Chuck’s team with 5 Shots!
